Over the course of the past couple of days, I have come across a number of exceptional resources relating to mathematics, computer science and popular science. Here are a couple of my favorites:

Crazy Questions at a Google Job Interview.
A free book on Abstract Algebra (is VERY useful for solving difficult logic questions in mathematics, provided you can understand it)
The Best Linux Distribution around - Ubuntu I highly recommend this GNU/Linux OS. It is extremely stable, full-featured, very powerful and exceptionally easy to install. It is also free and has a large community to solve any and all problems relating to it. Down with Microsoft! Long live the Penguins!!!
I also recommend the Firefox plugins - AdBlock Plus and Stumbleupon.

N-Puzzle

This is a beautiful puzzle called the N-Puzzle- it is short , simple but in no way sweet. We took it to Lucknow for the IYMC competition for a project display competition.

Ok, so all of us may have seen a sort of game that looks like the image below and played with it when we were kids :-

But here's what a curious person named Noyes Chapman did. He interchanged the position of 14 and 15. Now the basic puzzle looked as follows:-

Now it was given to be solved , that is, the aim was to get the above arrangement from a random arrangement.
And surprisingly, even though it looks easy at first, it was found to be insolvable.

This puzzle is also known by Fifteen Puzzle, Gem Puzzle, Boss Puzzle, Game of Fifteen or Mystic Square.

To prove- Fifteen Square is Unsolvable

The proof involves noting that there are two distinct sets of positions which can be assembled from the pieces with different parity, and there is no way of moving between them using the allowed moves, as they preserve parity. The parity in this context (the invariant) is the parity (odd or even) of the number of pairs of pieces in reverse order plus the row number of the empty square. For the order of the 15 pieces consider line 2 after line 1, etc., like words on a page. Thus an even permutation of the order of the 15 pieces can only be obtained if the empty square is not moved or moved two rows, and an odd permutation of the order of the 15 pieces can only be obtained if the empty square is moved one or three rows.

This small tweaking with the conventional stuff is a brilliant example of how small things can have complex consequences.

The impossible cube or irrational cube is an impossible object that draws upon the ambiguity present in a Necker cube illustration. An impossible cube is usually rendered as a Necker cube in which the edges are apparently solid beams. This apparent solidity gives the impossible cube greater visual ambiguity than the Necker cube, which is less likely to be perceived as an impossible object. The illusion plays on the human eye's interpretation of two-dimensional pictures as three-dimensional objects.

Viewed from a certain angle, this cube appears to defy the laws of geometry.

But actually it is not a cube. Viewed from another angle, however, the non-impossibility of the shape is apparent—its cubic nature itself is an illusion.

The Final round of the intersection mathematics quiz for class X will be held on Wednesday, the 16^th of May, in the AVH at 9:30. The qualifying teams are requested to report there at 9:20 sharp i.e. as soon as the break ends. Carry with you only a pen and nothing else.

1+2+3+4+5+6+7+(8*9)
(1*2*3*4)*(5+6)+7 - (8+9)

3)) it is LCM - 1
LCM is 2520 and the number is 2519

4)) the triangle numbers are represented by 1/2(n^2 + n) = nth term
we had to show that nth term + (n+1)th term is a perfect square
s=1/2(n^2 + n + n^2 + 1 + 2n + n+ 1)
=(n + 1)^2

8))i admit this was the toughest one according to your standards
S = 1+3+6+10+15+....................t(n) [t(n) is the nth term]
S= 1+3+ 6+ 10+ ..................t(n-1) + t(n) [shifting and writing again]
Subtracting
0= 1+2+3+4+.........+n - t(n)
t(n)=n(n+1)/2 [these are triangle numbers]

Now the question waxs to find the sum
S=summation[t(n)] summation is given by sigma
= 1/2Sum(n^2) + 1/2Sum(n)
= 1/2{1/6n(n+1)(2n+1) + 1/2n(n+1)}

after simplifying
S= 1/6(n)(n+1)(n+2)

INTERSECTION MATHS QUIZ CLASS XI

The answer to the cyborg shooters problem is as follows:

You are A, 1/3 accuracy
B is 1/2 accurate
C is always accurate
x X y = x shoots at y
As A, you can either:
1) shoot at B
2) shoot at C
3) shoot at the ground (deliberately miss).
1) a X b
if you hit (1/3 of the time), you lose, and C fires next and takes you out
otherwise (2/3 of the time) b X c as C is B's biggest threat. 1/2 the time B takes out C, which leaves a X b to resolve. 1/2 the time B misses, C kills B, and you have 1/3 chance to take out C before he takes you out.
First, a X b (with C out of the picture) is
1/3 + 2/3 * 1/2 * 1/3 + 2/3 * 1/2 * 2/3 * 1/2 * 1/3 + ...
= 1/3 + (1/3)^n * 1/3
= 1/3 + 1/6 = 1/2
So a X b (with C there) is
2/3 * 1/2 * 1/2 + 2/3 * 1/2 * 1/3 = 10/36 chance of winning
2) a X c
if you hit C, B shoots are you, 1/2 the time you survive and it boils down to the a X b (C out of picture) calculated above.
if you miss C, B shoots at C, 1/2 the time hits and it boils down to a X b above. 1/2 the time B misses, C takes B out, and you have 1/3 chance to take C out.
So a X c is
1/3 * 1/2 * 1/2 + 2/3 * 1/2 * 1/2 + 2/3 * 1/2 * 1/3
= 1/12 + 1/6 + 1/9 = 13/36 chance of winning
This makes sense, relatively, as you best hope is to take out the most accurate shooter.
3) option 3, you skip your turn by firing into the ground.
b X c, 1/2 the time B hits and it becomes a X b calculated above. The other 1/2, C takes out B and you have 1/3 chance to take out C.
So, A miss on purpose is
1/2 * 1/2 + 1/2 * 1/3 = 1/4 + 1/6 = 15/36 chance of winning.
So your best option, at 15/36 = 41.7% of winning, is to miss your first shot on purpose!!

TRICKS FOR EASIER AND FASTER CALCULATIONS

1.To find the square of a two digit no.

Example 32²

STEPS

1) First find the square of the digit at units place

2² = 4

32² = ____4

2) Find the product of the digit at units place, digit at tens place and the index and add the carry on(if there)

3*2*2 = 12

32² = ____24

here 1 is the carry on

3) now find the square of 3 and add the carry on

3² + 1 = 10
32² = 1024 (answer)

2.To find the cube of a two digit number

Example: 24³

Step 1
First we will find the cube of units place (that is 4 in this case)
4³=64
24³=___4 (we will write only 4 and will take 6 as a carry on)

Step2
Now we will find the product of both the digits, the no. and the index and will add
the carry on
So we will multiply (2*4*3*24)+6
(2*4*3*24)+6=582
24³=__824(here we will write only two digits i.e. 82 and will
take 5 as a carry on)

Step3
Now we will find the cube of digit at tens place and will add the carry on

Here we will find the cube of 2 and will add 5 which was the carry on obtained from
previous result)
2³+5=8+5=13

24³=13824 (answer)

3. To find the square of the three digit number

Example 246²

STEPS

1) To find the square of 6

6² = 36
We will write 6 and take 3 as carry on

246²= _____6

2) Now we will find the product of digit at tens place, the digit at units place and the index and we will add the carry on .
So, here we will multiply (4*6*2) + 3 = 51

246² = _____16
here we will take 5 as a carry on

3) Now we will find the square of 24 and add the [digit at hundreds place *(digit at unit place *index)] i.e.(2*(6*2)
and then add the carry on

24² + 2*12 + 5 = 605
246² = 60516 (answer)

4. To find the square of a number which has 6 in the units place

Example 96²

Steps
1.First we will find the square of digits in the units place i.e.6
6²=36
and we will write only 6 and will take 3 as a carry on
therefore 96²=___6 (take 3 as carry on)

2. Now we will multiply the digit at tens place with the index and will add the carry on.
(9*2)+3=21
here we will write only 1 and will take 2 as carry on
therefore 96²=__16 (take 2 as carry on)

3.Now we will find the product of the no.at tens place with the next no.
i.e in this case we will multiply 9*10(here 9 is the no. and 10 is the next no.) and we will add 2
9*10+2=92
96²=9216 (answer)

5. To find the square of a no. which has 8 in the units place

Example 482

1.first we will find the square of a digit in the units place i.e. we will find the square of 8.
82 =64 here we will write 4 and will take 6 as a carry on.
482=____4(here 6 is the carry on)

2.now we will multiply the digit at ten’s place with 6 and will add the carry on.
So here we will multiply 4 with 6 and will add 6.
(4*6)+6=30 here we will write 0 and will take 3 as a carry on.
482=__04

3.now we will multiply the digit at tens place with next no. so here we will multiply 4 with 5 and then we will add the carry on that is 3 in this case.
(4*5)+3=23

482=2304(answer)

Finals Maths Quiz Class 11 Important Information

So this post will help all the qualifying teams to better prepare for the quiz on Friday, the 9th of Feb 2007.
It is recommended that this post is read thoroughly and all further preparation is done accordingly. Believe me, the Quiz will not be easy .

Done with the Maths,
Now the Quiz!

There will be 6 rounds, and a Surprise Round if time permits.
Rounds will be General, Rapid Fire, Visuals, Problem Solving, etc.
The questions will consist of topics like General Maths Trivia, Personalities, Elementary Mathematical terms and concepts, Mental maths etc.
There is no need to as such spend time in practicing maths questions for the quiz. It is better if you research out as much as you can on the above mentioned topics.
Thinking logically on the spot will help.
All 6 rounds will be passable , except Rapid Fire, so there are lots of opportunities to gain points.
The Quiz will be made as interactive and interesting as possible.

1. First which almost all have attempted correctly had no logic except that you had to fill 1 and 8 in the center boxes and the rest follows. Note that in the solution given below order of the set of nos can interchange: (7182);[(64)(35)]

This was plain application of G.P The point to note is that the horizontal displacement is NOT being asked here. Also note that the ball travels 1m once but after that every other distance twice(while going up and while coming down)

D = 1 + 2 ( 1/3 + 1/9 + 1/27 + ..............∞)

= 1 + 2[(1/3) / (1 – 1/3)]

= 1 + 1

=2 meters

An interesting but non-mathematical problem.The catch is that as the water level rises, the ship also automatically rises and with it rises the ladder. Hence the max no of rungs submerged under water at any point is 3

4. The amount of wine in water is the same as the amount of water in wine.

There are two almost similar approaches to this question. I will be writing both: Let the volume of the cup is 1 cup, and the volume of each bucket is 10 cups. Clunking our way through this (and you don't really need to pay attention here), we see that after the first transfer the proportion of wine to total mixture in the water bucket is 1/11. Thus, on the return trip, the proportion of water to total mixture in the cup is 10/11. After dumping it in the wine bucket we get back to the original volume of 10 cups. The proportion of water to total mixture is

     (amount of water in wine bucket)/(total volume in wine bucket) =(10/11)/10  = 1/11

Well, what do you know. This is the same proportion as wine to total mixture in the
water bucket. Since both buckets are back to the same, original volumes, the amount
of wine in the water bucket is exactly the as the amount of water in the wine
bucket.

Assume that each glass contained 100 units of liquid and that the spoon held 10 units. The spoon first removes 10 units of water, so the water glass contains 90 units of water, and the wine glass contains 100 units of wine and 10 units of water.

With 110 units in the wine glass, the spoon will remove 1/11 of each liquid in that glass. Thus it will transfer to the water glass 9 1/11 units of wine and 10/11 units of water. The water glass will then contain 90 10/11 units of water and 9 1/11 units of wine, and the wine glass will contain 90 10/11 units of wine and 9 1/11 units of water.

By multinomial series method

We require a coefficient of x^10 or x^10k in (x^0 +x +x^2 +x^3 + ……+x^9)^10

(x^0 +x +x^2 +x^3 + ……+x^9)^10

==[[1(1 – x^10)/(1-x)]]^10

=={[1- x^10]^10}{[1-x]^(-10)}

Now in the above series we can always find a coefficient of x^10 or x^10k

6. We first line them up and ask first (n-1) persons to divide the object into 1/n parts each.The last person cannot divide and we have n parts.Then the “choosing” of the part follows the reverse order i.e. the last person chooses first and then the second-last and so on. The first person virtually has no option but to take away the left piece.The first person does not choose and the last person does not cut!

7. A = 3(area of sector describing 30 degrees) – 2(area of equilateral triangle)

= 3(π/6) – 2(root3 / 4) since radius of circle = length of side of triangle = 1 unit

Mathematical Project & Model-Making Competition

The Mathematical Society is organising a Mathematical Modelling & Project Making Competition for classes 8th & 9th. We expect partcipation in groups of 3 from each section. Teams are required to send in their project reports by 31st August to Maths Lab instructor Dr. Jonaki B. Ghosh. Projects shall be judged separately for classes 8th (Group A) & 9th (Group B).
After crutinising project reports, 6 projects will be selected from each group for presentation.

The following should at least give you an idea of what kind of projects to work on:

Projects based on some mathematical idea & extending it to solve some real-life or theoretical problems ( implying thougth problems).

Consider this thought problem:

I have kept bread crumbs at the corners of a pentagon. I leave an exploration loving but a hungry little bird at one of the corners. I sit back and watch it feed & explore all possible paths between the different locations of bread crumbs but without retracing any path traversed previously. What exactly I mean by a path, I would like to define. It is a line segment joining any pair of corners of the pentagon. Knowing all this, can I predict the total number of paths that can be explored & those left out ? What would be the result if I increased the number of corners? Can the result be generalised for higher polygons?

Using computer programming as a tool for problem-solving will be highly appreciated.

The event aims at encouraging team work which is the most important aspect of any collaborative research effort. In the history of science, some of the most beautiful and successful theories and discoveries that have been witnessed, have sprung from the convergence of great minds - be it the discovery of DNA double helix, the radioactive radium or neutron stars. Learning to train the mind, right from the beginning, to think-talk-work cooperatively in a group is essential.

Back On Track

Its been a long time since my last post. Was working on a project. Took me a month to figure out what exactly I wanted to do. Then working on that idea and creating just the basic framework ate away two more precious weeks. And finally when I was upto something...........I see myself getting absurd solutions. What a vaccation it has been! But I guess it is always exciting to work upon original ideas.

More interestingly, there shall be a mathematical project and modelling competition(not the one in which they show off their clothings or the absence there of) coming up for Classes 8th & 9th in the month of August. I was thinking it would be great if we could get some nice projects(more preferably working models) from this event for display and presentation on the day one of Mathematical Crusade.

If anyone is interested in attending lecture by Dr. Tripathi then please do leave some comment- that would at least give me an idea. I need to first convince Jonkai Ma'm, of course, but for that I need some good statistics - response from your side.

Another thing is that I have got two nice graph plotters with me(now please don't expect them to be even anywhere close to Mathematica and stuff- but they have some utility value i guess- it allows you to play around with functions, derivatives, slopes, 3D graphs, and so on). I was thinking if we could get them on this blog. Rasagy is there any scope for this??? Please do let me know.

I am sorry for not being able to upload the questions & solutions of the two events that have been organised till now. I shall try to do it as soon as I finish off with my exams in July.
The certificates for the teams that won in the Sudoku & mathematical Puzzle Solving Contest shall be given out in July as well. The final round of quiz for Class 10th is also scheduled for next month.

Well, after having a chat with some other members of the society, I think it will be better if we don't give out the scores or rankings. Instead I have decided that we shall give you the highest and the lowest scores... So u r somewhere in between

As Adrish said, it is in no way absolute & true assessment- you should, therefore, not conclude much from it. The final round is going to be quite different and disjoint from the prelims. So all that matters is that u have qualified or not!

And Yeah, just to remind you, WE WILL NOT ENTERTAIN ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS ABOUT THESE SCORES!!

The Highest Score was of 27 Marks, and the lowest being 21 Marks.

We shall have a Sudoku & Mathematical Puzzle solving competition for class 6th on 5th May.

The whole idea behind organising these competitions is to cater to the hopes of those many students who join conventional schooling with great expectations. But to our misfortune, the system pushes us into a very narrow minded approach towards education- we lose that creativity, that excitement & joy that lies in exploring nature- it is a wild forest- full of amazing things which lie before us to be explored. Mathematics, I believe, is that searchlight that shall take you through your hunt in this so called UNIVERSE. We at Maths Lab try to demonstrate how cutting edge technology can be applied in mathematics- powerful softwares like Mathematica & Autograph, loads of programming languages, those awesome graphic claculators, and a lot more. It all culminates in giving you a feel for mathematics. The motive is to make students think out of the box- to make them see the unintutitive marriage between mathematics & seemingly remote fields of knowledge, happen.
Let there be passion & love for discovery & exploration in the young minds.

MATSOC ppl n all interested shall be glad to know that tomorrow we will have the first interclass event (Maths Quiz for class10th) for this session. I wanted to remind the participants (all those who do visit our blog) that you are to reach the Maths Lab in the first period. The surge in participation from your side has pleased the MATSOC & we do believe now(and not just think) that the love & passion for the subject has not faded out from the young scientific minds; that they treat the subject as a challenge and tool to explore the hitherto unknown.

"The Mathematics is not enough"

Well here's a great news. We have decided to prepone the Maths quiz for class 10th (it is supposed to have at least 2 activities in a year)on the suggestion of Mrs. N. Laxmi. The notices shall be circulated to the classes and the posters stuck on the notice boards by Monday. All interested participants may contact their respective maths teachers for submitting your names. We expect 3 participants from each section. The prelims- written round- will be held on 28th of April in the Maths Lab. From this 15 students shall be selected for finals (to be held on 11th May). Expecting great enthusiasm from you all.
Hey, by the way, noticed the title of my post?? Wierd?? Naaa.
Why not??? Here is the answer.
Whether this universe has been created or has existed in this form, I know not. But what I do know is that this seemingly unbound vast expense has some real ferocious regions of space and time. Go close to it, beyond its horizon, you find yourself being split apart. Your head and trunk turn into bits of matter and then to blobs of energy- photons. The giant eats you and then spits you(or rather your E=mc^2). This black giant is what we call the BLACK HOLE. The very fact that it is called a 'hole' can prove my statement and I can finish it off in the next couple of words, but I shall not. What is so interesting about black holes?? They are black! Now is that a joke ?? Absolutely not! The truth is, being black doesn't allow us to peep into its extremities (very peculiar way of saving yourself from the eyes of Mathematics, I should say). Firstly we don't see it it. And when we get to it, we don't find it. Who is to be blamed??? Aha! I say Mathematics (what an irony! I love the subject and I say this!). Mathematics can explain all. Science can speak in this language. But it fails to explain what goes on in a black hole. It fails to deal with infinity- the infinite time & space dragged into the hole- the infinite mass of the universe it sucks in- an insatiable hunger. Mathematics cannot work in this "SINGULARITY" of function. The very idea why we cannot find a finite & well defined value for tan pi/2 explains why we cannot predict the events that might be occuring inside the balck hole!!

Those who are passionate about talking of space and time geometry, higher dimensions would certainly like to read 'Warped Passages' by Lisa Randall.Well another book you got to read is 'The lost lecture of Richard Feynman'- this book is the most awesome piece of work after Newton's Principia. The book takes us on a journey of proving why planets revolve in elliptical orbits, using pure plane geometry. Richard Feynman has dared to dream like Newton. He challenges Newton(remeber he had calculus to help him) by developing his own proof. He really deserved the Nobel Prize for Physics, 1965.Why are we talking about physics here? Because Mathematics is the heart of it. The heart fails, the body fails. I strongly believe in interdisciplinary research. Being shelled won't help. No two streams are irrelevant. No two sciences are disjoint. Each finds an application in the other. To separate one from the other means to be amputating the limbs of the body of knowledge. This is exactly what we, at the Maths Lab, try to profess & learn. When we say we know little about this universe(s), we mean that we know only a fraction of the rules of the game and only a fraction of the links between one move of the chess & the other. Learn to dream! Daydream!

Well the society has decided to organise events for all classes (apart from 12th- simply not possible). here's the list of activities and months they are scheduled for

That was just the crude thing. The interesting part follows.
I had a talk with Jonaki ma'm. We decided to have at least 2 guest lectures this year in the months of August and September. Most probably its going to be by Dr. Amitabha Tripathi(currently working as lecturer at IITD, Dept. Mathematics). The topic is going to be Ramsay Numbers. I know it is a repeat of the lecture we had in Maths Crusade last year. But this time we'll have it for a larger audience. Best part is from now on we shall have video recordings of all such lectures. Our grand event - Maths Crusade, will evolve this year. In what sense?? Well, it shall be a two day event. On the first day we shall have an exhibitions of 'working models (mathematical!)'. It is going to feature all models created by maths lab students (in our maths lab batch Aritra is already working on planimeter- a device for measuring area under a closed curve- uses trigonometry). We are aslo working on some projects which shall be displayed. Take for example Newton's method & Fractal pattern, Utility Theory for arbitration of disputes (thats my project) . I talked about some project and model making competition for 8th & 9th. These shall be on display as well. We shall be inviting models form other schools and the exhibition is actually going to be a competition. The second day will be the classical form of Crusade.
Well this time we shall make sure we have teams from the school going for competitions like Niamat Rai(an interschool contest organised by Springdales), INTEL Science Talent DIscovery Fair ( probably the best annual competitions amongst all).
I'll keep you updated.

Ok everyone...now's the time to gear up for a very happening interschool Mathematical Crusade!!!
The details are as follows...
"....
1. The contest will comprise of three rounds. The first round (round A) will be the short project presentation round, the second round (round B) will be quiz round and the third round (round C) will be a problem solving round.

2. The contest is open to students of class XI and XII. Each school should send a team of four participants of whom at least one must be from class XI. Two students will present their project in round A while the other two (the quizzers) will participate in round B. The quizzers must include one student from class XI and one from class XII. All participants are allowed to participate in Round C. Every team must be accompanied by a teacher.

3. Rules for Round A.
This is the Short Project Presentation Round. Each team must work on a project, which satisfies one of the following:
(i) The project must be based on some mathematical theory or it must highlight some mathematical concept.
(ii) The project must highlight some application of mathematics to a real life problem.
(iii) The project must be innovative in nature. Effort must be made by each team to make some original contribution to the problem at hand.
(iv) Projects must not reproduce text book material.

Each project must be supported by

(i) A project report comprising of not more than 8 to 10 A4 sheets typed in double space. No hand written projects will be entertained. Each project report must include a brief abstract (not more than 150 words), the aim or objective of the project, the mathematical theory, and findings and conclusions. Four copies of the report, duly signed by the head of the institution, must reach Delhi Public School R K Puram latest by 5th November 2005.

(ii) A computer presentation or a physical model. Special points will be given to teams who present their projects using both computer presentation and a physical model. Computer presentations can be made in MS PowerPoint or Flash. All teams must bring their computer presentations on CD’s only. No school will be allowed to bring their own CPU. If any other equipment is required for presentation, it must be brought by the participating team. Each team will be given 8 minutes for presenting their project.

The projects will be judged on the following criteria:
(i) Originality of idea and innovativeness.
(ii) Practical relevance.
(iii) Presentation during the contest.

4. Rules for Round B.
This is the Mathematics Quiz Round. Questions posed in this round will be based on the following:
a. History of Mathematics.
b. Applications of Mathematics.
c. Mathematics concepts (from class XI and XII level)

5. Rules for Round C.
This is an on-the-spot problem-solving round where problems will be posed to the teams and they will be required to present the solution within a certain time.

The contest will be held on Tuesday, 22nd November 2005. Registration will be from 8:30 to 9:30 am. The competition will begin sharp at 9:30 am.

6. Schools are requested to confirm their participation latest by 15th October...."

Piet hein was a danish poet and scientist who made many contributions in many fields ranging from literature, Science, Design and Mathematics.

His cheif contributions to mathematics were the discovery of the Soma Cube and the creation of a new Geometrical form called the super-ellipse which is a cross between a recatangle and a ellipse. The equation for the shape is: x/a^n + y/b^n = 1

This equation produces several shapes hyperbolic cusps for n<1>1 the super-ellipse has a value of n = 2.5

Apart from this Piet hein also wrote Grooks, short poems writren by him, till date he has written something like 7000 grooks.

Guess and find the Cube Root!!

Let the no., whose cube root is to be calculated, be "a"
For example, let a=6

Begin with a guess, say x, to be its cube root.
In this case x=3/2

*** This guess is based on simple reasoning that cube of 2 is 8 and therefore 2 is too high and cube of 1 is 1 which means 1 is very low.The better the guess, the accurate the result ***

Now, we have a formula-

Y = 1/3[2x + a/(x*x)]

Y = 1/3[2*3/2 + 6/(9/4)] = 1/3[3 + 24/9] = 51/27 = 1.888888
Repeat the process by taking x = 51/27
The process can be repeated successively to get more accurate result, by taking Y=x.

Example2 : to find cube root of a=89
let x=9/2 then
Y = 1/3[2*9/2 + 89/(81/4)]
= 1/3[9 + 4.3950]
= 3 + 1.4650
= 4.4650
Repeat the process by taking x = 4.4650

Finally!!
Had it in the AVH, of course...There were 4 rounds--Logic, Visual, Rapid Fire, and Mixed Bag.

The 10thees were a little overexcited(hence, hard to discipline :-) )
Most of the teams were able to crack the logic questions. Visuals were welcomed with enthusiasm and generally people enjoyed them. Rapid fire came as an initial shock to the 1st team we started with, i guess, but wasn't much of a problem for others. Honestly, they all needed to improve the speed of their calculations. They were more comfortable with the mixed bag round because it is typical of quizes and was scoring.

TOKYO - A Japanese psychiatric counselor has recited pi to 83,431 decimal places from memory, breaking his own personal best of 54,000 digits and setting an unofficial world record, a media report said Saturday.
Akira Haraguchi, 59, had begun his attempt to recall the value of pi - a mathematical value that has an infinite number of decimal places - at a public hall in Chiba city, east of Tokyo, on Friday morning and appeared to give up by noon after only reaching 16,000 decimal places, the Tokyo Shimbun said on its Web site.
But a determined Haraguchi started anew and had broken his old record on Friday evening, about 11 hours after first sitting down to his task, the paper said.
He reached the 80,000-digit mark after midnight early Saturday, according to the paper, which had a photo showing Haraguchi with his eyes closed, his face contorted in concentration.
If verified and recognized by the Guinness Book of Records, Haraguchi's feat would beat his own previous best - currently under review - of 54,000 digits. The official current record-holder, also Japanese, calculated pi from memory to 42,195 decimal places in 1995.
Pi, usually given as an abbreviated 3.14, is the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a circle. The number has fascinated and confounded mathematicians for centuries.
Aided by a supercomputer, a University of Tokyo mathematician set the world record for figuring out pi to 1.24 trillion decimal places in 2002.
Researchers say that calculating pi to more than about 1,000 decimal places has not much purpose in math or engineering, though mathematicians have done so to test the accuracy and limits of supercomputers.

When you look at this, you would SWEAR that it is a spiral. The lines are obviously moving in toward the center.
But NO, the lines that look like a spiral are actually concentric circles. To prove it, you'll have to move your eyes along the lines very carefully and slowly, or just use your oily finger to leave a nice grease mark on the screen.

Symmetry

One of the most important conceptual tools in modern science is the notion of symmetry. Although we all have an intuitive idea of what it means for something to be symmetrical (e.g. a circle has more symmetry than an irregular polygon), science requires a rigorous definition. An object is said to be symmetrical if it remains unchanged after a symmetry operation has been applied on it. If one object has more symmetries than another, we say it is more symmetrical. For example, a square is left unchanged by any rotation through 90o, or 180o, or 270o. Such rotations are among the symmetries of the square. An irregular polygon, on the other hand will look different after being rotated through any angle. It therefore has no symmetries: the square is more symmetrical. The most symmetrical of all such geometrical shapes that we can draw on a plane is the circle. It can be rotated through any angle between 0o and 360o. Thus the circle has an (uncountable) infinity of symmetry operations that leave it unchanged.

Now we have used the concept of symmetry as the basis of modern Physics Laws...can u tell what kind of symmetry we use in it??

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

1. Each computer science section must have an entry in category A and all other
sections must have an entry in category B.
2. Each team MUST have two members and each section can have up to 3 teams.
3. The participants of category A will be called to write a program in c++ or in basic
in school in the month of July.
4. The Participants of category B can make their power point presentation over the
vacations at home and can submit it on a floppy by the third week of July.
5. Category A will be marked on :
· Topic and idea
· Logic
· Appropriate length of program
· Presentation
· Number of test inputs successful
6. Category B will be marked on :
· Application in real life problems.
· Creativity
· Presentation
· Animations and Aesthetics…
7. Best five entries in each category will be adjudged in the AVH.
8. All participants will get a participation certificate.
9. Last slide in power point presentation must have the names of the participant and
their group name.
10. In the programming language , the program MUST contain the names of
participant and their group name.
11. All interested students must enrol themselves before the summer vacation to
any one of the following students :

The Class tenth maths quiz - final round has been postponed to July and will be held after the July examinations.

Mathematical Quiz for class 10

The prelims of quiz were held on the 10 May, 2005. The participants were called in the Maths lab in their home rule and fourth period. The quiz was a success and the 10thees exhibited loads of interest, which was commendable. To top it, the results were good. Not much variation in scores of the top finalists and the ones who just scraped through. So, hopefully the finals would be tough, competitive and definitely decisive.
The question paper of the prelims will be posted soon with the answers and other details.
The final round's date has still not been finalised and the participants will be informed as soon as the arrangements are made.

Tech-Know-Math

All students are invited to participate in tech-know-math
The categories are as follows:
Category A:
For computer science sections
You are required to make a program in c++ language preferably on any mathematical topic.
Some suggested topics are :

Solving equations in n variables
Solving n degree equations
Plotting dynamic functions
Plotting 3-d conics
Magic Squares
Diophantine Equation

The program has to be written in school in June. The participants can think over the topic,logic, presentation,etc during summer vacations.

Category B:

You need to make a power point presentation on any topic in Maths that has relevance in our day to day life.

Some suggested topics are :

Calculus
Matrices
Trigonometry
Sequences and Series
Probability

This category is especially for non computer sections.

Both the categories are open to all sections, but each computer section must have an entry from Category A and each of the other sections must have an entry from Category B. A team can have a maximum of two members. There can be atmost 5 teams from each section.
